Koyaanisqatsi: Life Out of Balance, is a 1982 American experimental film directed by Godfrey Reggio with music composed by Philip Glass and cinematography by Ron Fricke.


It is a visual poem that consists primarily of footage of cities and many natural landscapes across the United States. It also has a lot of timelapses. No dialogue, no vocalised narration, just images and remarkable soundtrack by Philip Glass. The film looks the effect man has had on the landscape and the environment. It is one of my favourite films.

Watching Koyaanisqatsi inspired me to grab a camera and try to make few timelapses my self. And there are two I would like to share. The first one I made with the help of my comrade / cinematographer Ilja Schnitzer back in New York. We got the RED scarlet, got into Ilja's car, set slow shutter on the camera and voilà:

The second one I did overnight next to Seaford, UK during the Perseids. It is one of the brightest meteor showers visible from Earth. The annual light display takes place in mid-August and is caused by the Earth passing through debris shed by the comet Swift-Tuttle. I decided to film this astonishing event:
